It's a fashion movement, and it's the most imperialistic one you could ever imagine. Poor areas with rich culture are steamrolled over, as a homogenous wave of liberal arts students try on, commodify, and sell its remnants. Everything is a fashion than can be taken on or thrown out, and every part of culture is there to be declawed then commodified for this very same group.

Get the hipstermug. Someone who is in the state of being "basic", or is classified as such, yet longs to be a "hipster." Like Pinocchio longed to be a real boy, these Pinocchio-Hipsters long to be real hipsters. Yet no matter how hard they try, how hard they grunge, or how tight their jeans are... they are doomed to be "basic," forever.
Cate longed to become hipster, but she was basic to the core. Like a giraffe in a duck costume, this Pinocchio Hipster wasn't fooling anyone.

Get the Pinocchio Hipstermug. Think that they're different than 'most' people for stumbling upon interests, music, or having ideas that are not yet considered "popular" to a vast amount of people. Once those things have reached a high volume of others, they are no long "quirky" or "cool".
"Have you ever listened to (ironic band name here) ? Probably not “hipster” enough. They dont have any recordings and never released any albums. They played their first live show in my basement, and I was the only one there. After their set, I murdered all of them so that I could be the only one to ever know what they sounded like. Never heard anyone like them."
