You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit

It is impossible for a person to create something good out of something that is, by its very nature, bad.
(coming out of a movie theater)
Guy 1: That was the worst movie ever, man.
Guy 2: I know! But! Leonardo DiCaprio was the best out of them, though. His acting blew everyone else's right out of the water! Too bad everything else sucked.
Guy 1: Oh, well. You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Who would you rather sit next to on a bus?

A game that consists of posing the question: "Who would you rather sit next to on a bus?" Then two options are provided, fictional characters, prominent figures, or acquaintances. The person(s) who the question then selects from the choices and then poses a new scenario. Different scenarios are possible but is usually that the bus ride is of medium duration of length, too long to go without acknowledging the other parties presence, but too short to create a meaningful bonding experience.

I ask for you to make an effort to understand me

A succinct phrase that unfortunately has to be used whenever a person, despite already doing the best you can to make your point clear, has misinterpreted your point.

Using this phrase is almost essential nowadays when you try to express your opinion on the internet.
Internet user 1: So what you're saying is that people aren't allowed to have personal opinions?

Internet user 2: I ask for you to make an effort to understand me. I am not saying that people's right to freedom of speech should be taken away, but rather that free speech should have limits. Hate speech crosses that limit.
