In New York City and surrounding suburbs 'The Island' means Long Island. Specifically the geographical part of Long Island that does not include the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens which are technically ON Long Island. That is, it refers to Nassau and Suffolk counties (of New York State).

Invanisible

It's when you're leaving the bar at 2 am and you're driving in a "soccer mom" minivan above the speed limit with cop cars sitting at the corners of every other intersection. You just cruise on by because the driver and passengers that are riding in the minivan are all invanisible.

Driver: Oh crap, I better not speed, there's cops everywhere!

Passenger: Who cares, we're in a van. They can't see us.
Driver: Oh yeah. We are invanisible.
