Mainstream Bias

The unexamined tendency to believe that ideas, aesthetics, or sources of information are more valid, credible, or important simply because they are amplified by dominant cultural institutions (corporate media, major publishers, blockbuster studios, top-charting algorithms). It conflates prevalence with quality and popularity with truth. This bias creates a feedback loop where mainstream ideas get more attention because they are mainstream, making alternative perspectives seem fringe by definition, not by merit.

Example: Dismissing a groundbreaking scientific paper because it was published in a specialized journal and not on the cover of Nature or Science is Mainstream Bias. It assumes that the gatekeepers of prestige are infallible arbiters of significance, potentially missing revolutionary work that hasn't yet been blessed by the establishment.

Mainstream Neutrality Bias

The assumption that ideas circulated by mainstream institutions—major media outlets, established publishers, popular platforms—represent a neutral middle ground between fringe extremes. The Mainstream Neutralist treats the Overton Window as if it were reality itself, rather than a socially constructed range of acceptable debate. They forget that today's mainstream was yesterday's radical fringe and will be tomorrow's obsolete relic. The mainstream isn't neutral—it's just where power has currently settled.

"I just read the centrist newspaper—they're not biased like those crazy partisan sites," she said, unaware that her "centrist" paper had an editorial board, a corporate owner, and a demographic of readers whose interests shaped every story. Mainstream Neutrality Bias: when the middle of the road is still a road, built somewhere, going somewhere.

Mainstream Downstream

An adjective to describe a band or a brand that is not regularly mainstream, but it is mainstream for alternative people.

B: No? That is the most niche band ever!
Later
A: I'm listening to this band. Have you hard of this?
A's friends: Dude stop listening to that NPC music, and get a unique personality
A: This band is mainstream downstream.

Mainstream Menace

A Mainstream Menace is someone who out trounces his more talented fellows and still ensures that what we consider mainstream is rather subjective.

Akiyuki Shinbo has become a long term Mainstream Menace by having redefined both anime and Japanese meme culture from the 1980s to the 2020s, partly thanks to his wildly excessive use of Wakame Shadows from early in his career.

The Mainstream

A machination of the corporate world. Designed to target a creative outlet and turn it into a business model, target market, key demographic, etcetera.

How the mainstream operates:

1. The mainstream is established...
2. An alternative is established to the mainstream...
3. The mainstream targets the alternative...
4. The alternative becomes the mainstream...

And therefore the alternative loses its identity, having become absorbed by the very system it was established to rally against. Mainstream for the masses...

Anti - Mainstream

Someone who is anti - mainstream has a strong dislike of trendy things and people. Many subcultures have preached about being anti - mainstream, most notably punk and heavy metal. Death metal, Black metal, and a few lesser known subgenres of punk rock remain the longest standing anti - mainstream subcultures while others have either become popular (I.e punk) or merged into other more popular subcultures(I.e classic metal and thrash metal). While music subcultures have the biggest anti - mainstream message other subcultures based around religion (I.e LaVeyan Satanism), politics(i.e non partisans), and even literature have emerged. Most trendy things start out anti - mainstream and become popular usually after a slight change in image (I.e in the 1920's united states when white people began playing jazz it became acceptable).

Punk was the first major anti - mainstream subculture, shortly followed by heavy metal and hip - hop.

Anti-Mainstream

There are people out there who have a dislike for mainstream. Some hate it, some can tolerate it but not really prefer it. Many people ask why some people hate mainstream. Some reasons are that some people what to be different. But, in other cases it's just that mainstream things get boring. You hear some songs play on the radio on repeat and you get tired of it. Everyone listens to it, everyone knows the words, so it just becomes..well..un-original. Some people like things that aren't popular because they feel more freshened out. For example, when you are a fan of a widely known celebrity, you have many people screaming that they're that persons number one fans. You have the haters and all the mix up you see on the media. When it comes to lesser known artists, their music is more heard, you know what i mean? You won't usually see their fans fighting and etc because the fans are really alla bout the music. Okay it's really hard to explain, but i'll try to wrap it up in a few sentences. Mainstream can get boring, used and un-original. Some people do't mind that, but others rather a more unique view on things. When it comes to clothing most anti-mainstream shoppers would get their clothes from thrift shops, maybe even hot topic and lesser known stores instead of Urban Outfitters or Aeropostale. I hope this makes more sense.

Anti-Mainstream is when your not into/against mainstream or widely popular things. Like when you rather the band SmallPools over One Direction. And when you rather the movie Killing Daddy instead of Insidious.
