Originated as as a prison term. For when serving food, instead of a heaping or decent spoonful, they shake the spoon before serving. Thus, serving less. Could be used in any situation where someone is being stingy with provisions.
I don't know why the boss has to subtract the 5 minutes I came in late and the 5 minutes I left early from my timecard. Tightwads like that always shake the spoon.

Girl 1: "Did you break up with your boyfriend?"
Girl 2: "No, he said he was sorry for forgetting my birthday."
Girl 1: "Gag a maggot with a spoon."

An alternative terminology to the traditional "big spoon" and "little spoon." Couples who argue over spooning positions may use this without disregarding convention if the smaller partner feels more comfortable cuddling from behind, with "backpack" implying that someone smaller would be strapped around the bigger partner as if they were a normal sized backpack, which is typically smaller than the individual.
Partner 1: Can I be the small spoon tonight? You always make me the big spoon and it feels wrong, ok?
Partner 2: No honey it's ok. You're the backpack spoon.

in modern day street slang, a “silver spoon present” represents the use of heroin, as silver unlike other metals reduces the risk of toxins being released into the drug when ignited.
