Most modders will only upload to Nexus because they are promised some sort of payment for number of downloads, so you are screwed if you don't want to go through their hoops, as mod mirrors are actively taken down by the mod authors themselves.
This website is not just a repository however, as there are strong policies in place to ban shared accounts or mods the admin team might find distasteful or disrespectful. Examples where this is not the case include a Skyrim mod that lets you interact with children NPCs like you would with a normal NPC, most commonly downloaded alongside a mod that lets you have sexual relationships with NPCs. Take of that what you will, but the NexusMods admin team has a pretty well known reputation.
