This is definitely my personality type. Aesthetic Grunge belongs to the type of people who listen to Halsey, Melanie Martinez, or any other unknown, kind of alternative pop artist. They mostly wear black clothing with a flannel tied around their waist. Their typical emotions are anxiety, sadness, and angst. Most Aesthetic Grungies are girls between the ages of 13 and 19. They don't actually smoke, but they tell other people that they vape to seem cool or rebellious. If you're confused about this personality type, just look up "aesthetic grunge" on google images and you'll get the gist.
Normal Person: Wait, so you're not grunge?
Me: Nope.
Normal Person: Pastel Goth?
Me: I'm aesthetic grunge. It's a combination of the two.

Get the Aesthetic Grunge mug.Grunge is a term used particularly by the media in hopes of classifying the unusual, unique and different sounds that emerged from the Seattle scene during the late 1980's and good portion of the 1990's. However, some Music Historians argue that grunge had existed long before these decades, suggesting that musicians such as Neil Young and The Wipers were the first artists to use the "grunge effect" in their musical compositions. This term indicated the murky, "dirty" sounds that originated from guitars from various artists such as: Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Melvins, Bush, Green River, Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Helmet, Love Battery, Mad Season, Porno for Pyros, Screaming Trees, Silver Chair, The Stone Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Temple of The Dog and many other bands. Yet, hard and heavy metal rock had been embedded in grunge's roots, since most of the inspirations originated from "raw rock" during the 1960's - 1970's.
Another analogy associated with grunge music is a term known as "The Explosion of The Big Four". This described the sudden explosion of underground thrash/analytical-punk/metal music in the mainstream. The "Big Four" refers to the main bands that had caused grunge music to be such a success: Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
Furthermore, the era in which grunge became popular had other causes as well. Most of the younger generations rebelled against parents and society, causing them to turn to music in which they could relate to, instead of the typical 1980's hair metal scene, which included artists such as Poison and Motley Crue, who typically wrote about unrealistic and uncreative occurrences that did not deeply impact society.

"Screw the Crue, it's all about Grunge." Crue, meaning Motley Crue and other bands that emerged from the 1980's due to the band's popularity.
"F*ck it, let's Grunge it." Meaning, f*ck the other bullshit, let's get genuine about it and f*ck society.
"Better for Grunge to be dead, than be mainstream." Since grunge balanced with underground, many fans felt that the underground should never have mixed with the mainstream, due to the exploitation and abuse of being unique and different from the typical 1980's - 1990's pop sound.

lawl its like ppl who hav long hair n wear ripped jeans n r depressed n stuffz lawl oh yea and they listen 2 nirvana n dress like kurt cobain yeah they like this and they dress like that lawl
But seriously...
Anyone can have long hair, everyone wears fucking ripped jeans and everyone gets depressed sometimes. What someone wears, looks like and how they act has NOTHING to do with what kind of music they listen to. There's no fucking dress code for liking a certain form of music; there are no rules and or requirements. Grunge is a genre of music, and that is all.

Get the grunge man mug.The outbreak of grunge due to the success of Nirvana starting in 1991. Commonly compared to the outbreak of punk in the late 70s caused by the Sex Pistols. The key difference is that the Sex Pistols achieved fame from being intentionally chaotic public figures whose goal was to create controversy. They wanted the fame, because they wanted to piss Britain off. Nirvana, particularly Kurt Cobain, did not want any fame whatsoever and wished for grunge to stay underground. Their success was an accident, one that calls back to their tour with Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth had recently signed to a major record label, DGC, but with the intent of keeping their trademark noise rock and to basically sabotage and manipulate the mainstream from within. Kim Gordon then invited Kurt to have Nirvana join DGC, and though reluctant at first, they eventually went for it, growing tired of Sub Pop and assuming they could do the same as SY. Kim's fatal mistake was forgetting that Nirvana was a much younger band that did not know how to keep their success on the down low like Sonic Youth could. The mainstream, tired of new wave and hair metal, saw Smells Like Teen Spirit on MTV all across the nation and decided this was the next big thing, completely ignoring what Nirvana stood for and blindly consuming the music without thought. Thus, the grunge explosion. Only lasted about 3-4 years before being killed off by sellout post-grunge bands following what unfortunately became a mainstream trend.
Already existing bands that gained popularity during the grunge explosion include what became the big four (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains), Mudhoney, Temple of the Dog, Mother Love Bone (posthumously), Screaming Trees, the Melvins, and outside the Seattle area, Hole, Babes in Toyland, and L7. Some more than others. Then there's Stone Temple Pilots, who had a good first album, but then sold out big time, resembling post-grunge instead.
