The term "Emo" is used as counterculture; it is an abreviation of the word "emotional". Emo it's defining not only an attitude, but also a fashion that are coming from emocore (emo music). Emocore is a combination between hardcore and punk music which was very popular in Washington DC in the late 80's. The emo culture continued to develop between '90 and '00, reaching the height of its popularity today.

I'm not emo because I think it's cool, I'm a very expressive person, artsy, and I've been emo/punk for most of my life, you guys are ignorant. Yes, many of us are from well-off families who don't understand, but that's our choice. You're stereotyping people you don't even know. I have tons of friends (some who are very popular), I don't cut myself, I'm perfectly happy! There's so many more misconceptions... okay, maybe my hair is half pink, maybe I wear tighter jeans then the rest of you, maybe I listen to less popular music because it's way better than listening to a bleach blond tramp who forgot to wear underwear! It's our choice, and you shouldn't judge. That's like asking a football player why he plays football. So stupid, so trivial, so ignorant.

The society thinks emos are failures; they are not strong enough to hide their emotions.
You don't have to be emo to listen to punk/hardcore/post hardcore music.
Also having black hair (natural or dyed) can't label you as an emo (unless you want to). Emo is used as an insult these days to label people with high emotions and/or people who wears black clothes.
Emo is not as bad as the society sees them. Why would people discriminate or judge emos when they have done nothing wrong to the society but all they have done is having their hair painted/naturally black, listening to rock/punk/hardcore music, or wearing black clothes.
People shouldn't be judging anyone just because of what they do or just because of the music they listen to. Everyone has different tastes and no one should be discriminating others just because of those reasons.

They find drama where there doesn't need to be any. Most usually have black, shaggy hair, a 28 inch waist or smaller, are Caucasian or Oriental, and listen to manufactured music that will be forgotten about in less than a year.

1) A person who listens to bands such as My Chemical Romance or Black Veil Brides is NOT "emo"
2) A person who is depressed is NOT "emo"
3) A person who dresses a certain way is NOT "emo".
4) Everybody who seems to make fun of people just for feeling how they feel, or liking what they like, or dressing how they dress, can fuck themselves. You don't see me going around making fun of you for listening to Lil' Wayne or wearing Nikes and playing basketball, now do you? The people you define as "Emo" have never done anything to you, and therefore you should stop shoving your head up your ass. Making fun of someone for self-harming or telling them to kill themselves is unacceptable and disgusting. Think about what kind of human that makes you.
5) If people call you emo, or you're suicidal, know that I'm always here to talk. They're not any better than you and you don't deserve the shit you get. Stay strong, and don't let them get to you. Don't be ashamed for liking a certain type of music or dressing a certain way. You be you, and don't let anyone bring you down for it.

Get the Emo mug.Emo is a genre of music, a type of pop-punk music, but with a softer, more mainstream and guitar-based sound. It is NOT a type of person/style, as more commonly thought. "Emo" people can be classified under "scene", which is basically the same thing.

A lot of people have stereotyped emo, and like most stereotypes, a little of it CAN be true, but not completly. Some examples are
- All emos cut/slit their wrist
- They are always depressed
-Drama queens/kings
-Terrible with kids
There are a lot more, but these are actually a few of the least offensive I have come across. Again, there can be some truth to stereotypes, but most of it is made up.
Most 'Emos' are a bit emotionally sensitive (hence the name 'emo'), which isn't always a bad thing. They are just a little more aware of their emotions, and aren't afraid to show them. Some are. There also is a genre of music that is called Emo. This tends to get mixed up/combined with scene, goth, and punk.
