A survivor of rape, several years on might be more open about his or her feelings in regard to this and show more obvious signs of their depression.
Someone who has experienced an abortion as the result of sexual abuse might have a long term alienation and confusion over their life and a more subtle form of ongoing depression they don't really talk about.
A lot of people with depression are considered selfish and self-centred, which is an ignorant way of looking at that person. If someone has horrendous problems, of course they're going to be depressed over them.
