Arthur Dimmesdale

Character in the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The man with which Hester Pryne conceives her child Pearl. He is outwardly veiwed as a saint, which only increases his inner hatred of his inability to confess his sin. His guilt leads him to punish himself physically and mentally. It is possible that, in addition to becoming gaunt, his guilt caused him to develop a heart problem.

"The aged members of his flock, beholding Mr. Dimmesdale's frame so feeble, while they themselves so rugged in their infirmity, believed that he would go heavenward before them, and enjoined it upon their children that their old bones should be buried close to their young pastor's holy grave. And, all this time, perchance, when poor Dimmesdale was thinking of his grave, he questioned with himself wether the grass would ever grow on it, because an accursed thing must there be buried." - The Scarlet Letter
(The Interior of a Heart)

Translation: The old people that he preaches to think he is so humble and saint-like, that they want to be buried close to him. But Arthur Dimmesdale thinks he is so sinful that grass wouldn't grow on his grave when he dies.

Spit the Dummy

Australian Term: To indulge in a sudden display of anger or frustration; to lose one’s temper. The phrase is usually used of an adult, and the implication is that the outburst is childish, like a baby spitting out its dummy in a tantrum and refusing to be pacified. (Dummy is a pacifier)

'There's no reason for me to spit the dummy,' he said. 'Why do I have to be a rude cunt out of the car when I've demonstrated what I can do inside of it?'

dummy-chucker

1. Original meaning: A confidence man who practices the early twentieth century con game of dummy-chucking.

2. A person who fakes epileptic seizures in order to gain sympathy or charity, as in the short story "The Dummy-Chucker" by Arthur Somers Roche.

3. Any person who fakes injury or illness in order to gain sympathy, charity or compensation.

Dummy-chucking is a fraud in which a mannequin (or dummy) is placed on a roadway on a dark night. If a vehicle runs over the dummy then the confidence man runs onto the road, throws (chucks) the dummy out of sight and then lays down in its place and pretends to have painful injuries. If the driver stops to see what happened then the dummy-chucker begs for monetary compensation.
