Flag Planting is when something is done to claim ownership, conquest of or co opt a character / Intellectual property or fandom especially for ideological reasons. Making a clear change in direction from what it originally was.

To cause a shift or change from the original character into something else. Like the trend of turning heterosexual characters into LGBT is Flag Planting, Race swapping a character is Flag Planting, Gender swapping a character and or protagonist is Flag Planting. Retconning established Lore and or universe to suit an agenda goal or ideology is Flag planting.

All-New X-Men #40 (2015) Iceman from Marvel's X-Men was turned gay. Flag planting him asnLGBT character. Following comics shifted focus to LGBT romance Iceman. From that comic going forward Iceman from Marvel's X-Men is considered an LGBT character.

Yamato a female character in One Piece franchise.

Attempts to Flag Plant Yamato as a Trans character. Despite canon depiction of her as female. Out of ADMIRATION of Kozuki Oden who she looked up to as a child. Yamato called herself the SON of Oden.

Several things confirmed Yamato is not Trans. Like the Vivre Card a method of navigation in One Piece confirmed Yamato is a biological female and not Trans. Also Eiichiro Oda the author and creator of One Piece franchise publicly confirming that Yamato is not Trans.

Several attempts was made of Flag Planting to push the false narrative that Yamato is a Trans character. Enraged people across Social Media platforms like Twitter / X made insults and threats against Eiichiro Oda the content creator as they were unable to Flag Plant Yamato claiming her as a Trans character.
