Pain ranges anywhere from a dull throb to a sharp piercing pain, and can be found from the knees to the ankles and all in between. Running on shin splints can lead to fractures of the tibia. Shin splints are a vicious cycle; you overwork your muscles, you rest them to heal, your muscles weaken. Those weak muscles and shins (now splint-free) are more susceptible to shin splints because of their weakness. It can go on forever.
