The capital and largest city of Croatia on the Sava River in the north-central part of the country. Originally a Roman town, it came under the control of Hungary in the 13th century. During the 19th century the city was a center of Croatian nationalism, and it became the capital of an autonomous Croatia within the kingdom of Hungary in 1868.
