The beta wolf in a pack is basically the second in command in the pack. If the Alpha wolf dies, the beta is either challenged for leadership, or is automatically made Alpha, the leader of the pack. The beta carries out the orders of the alpha. There is usually a beta female and male, like there are alphas.

This phrase originated in Blizzard Entertainment's Diablo 3 Message Boards when the highly-anticipated Closed Beta version of Diablo 3 game was on the verge of release. Users began posting incoherent events as signs that the Beta was about to begin. Nearly all of them proved to be false, or were jokes.
