Named after the gaming acronym that stands for "non-playable character", NPC refers to the persons who control our lives too much that we cannot strive for the best for ourselves anymore.

Sometimes it feels like my parents are such NPCs, controlling every decision I make, leaving me with no room to chase my own dreams.

Non-Player Character; literally, a character in a video game that is not controlled by the player(s). In recent years, however, "NPC" has morphed into a derogatory term for people who are perceived as being easily manipulated and incapable of original, objective thought, much like an actual video game NPC.

The meteoric rise of the acronym "NPC" being used as a slang term for people who seemingly have no original thoughts and can be "programmed" into mindlessly believing anything coincided with the similarly meteoric rise of the Dead Internet Theory in the 2020s.
