When a law or rule has the dubious distinction of making you do the opposite of what was intended.

A literal example of the yellow light effect is to speed up when you see a yellow light. Figuratively, you do the opposite.

Yellow Light of Death

abb. YLOD. A light that is displayed when the PlayStation 3 games console experiences total hardware failure of any kind. The system then turns itself off and cannot be turned back on again without fixing the system.
This is typically attributed to either the CPU or the GPU failing due to bad soldering methods. This mainly occurs with launch PS3s, but some newer PS3s have known to have 'gone' YLOD as well.
It is very similar to the Red Ring of Death experienced by the Xbox 360 games console.
Fixing a YLOD is not easy and is costly most of the time.

"I just completed Metal Gear Solid 4 and was saving the game when my PS3 displayed the Yellow Light of Death and my life was ruined. Facepalm."

Yellow light run 

It's that sudden last minute overspeeding run that people often make to cross the traffic signal while it is still yellow. A common practice in India and has killed many, however, still remains a favorite street antic for many.

Girl: Dude, look yellow light still, hit the gas and let's cross it while it's yellow

Guy: Anything you say darling...time for a Yellow light run and here we go....

Girl and guy: oh nooooooo......

Yellow Light Game

A game played on the inside of a moving car in which any time the car is under a yellow traffic light (though some interpretations state that the yellow light only needs to be seen by any one or more of the passengers). After the presence of the yellow light is made known, all passengers must try to touch the ceiling of the car. The last individual to touch the ceiling of the car must remove one article of clothing of their choice. Please note that the driver may participate in the game, but any safety hazards resulting from the driver of a large vehicle trying to pull their shirt over their head are not the responsibility of the individual writing this definition.

Person 1: Yellow light!
(Persons 2-4 place their hands of the ceiling of the car)
Person 5: Dammit, I was texting!
Person 1: The yellow light game rules!

Yellow Light Game

A game played on the inside of a moving car in which the yellow light only needs to be seen by any one or more of the passengers. After the presence of the yellow light is made known, all passengers must try to touch the ceiling of the car. The last individual to touch the ceiling of the car must remove one article of clothing of their choice (if the clothing is a pair like shoes or socks it counts as one piece of clothing, jewellery doesn’t count as clothing). If you can’t remove a piece of clothing you are out and have to sit there until the game ends. The game ends when there is one player left or you get to the destination. Would be a good idea to put clothes on before you step out the car.

Person 1: Yellow Light !
*everyone touches roof of the car before Person 3*
Person 3: I’ll take my top off
Person 2: We’ll keep playing Yellow Light Game until everyone but one person is left

Yellow-Lighting

When engaging in sexual intercourse, the woman engages the male sexually, getting him to feel like he is going to ejaculate. She speeds up really quickly, like that of a car before the a yellow light, but then right before he releases, she stops, similar to a car once the light turns red and it hasn't made the intersection.
