Used in the world of football as a way to describe a team who has the support of the referee. A soccer team is made up of 10 players (excluding the goal keeper), formations are put forth in formats such as: 442 (4 defenders, 4 midfielders & 2 forwards). The match officials or the refereeing team are made up of 4 individuals, when the refs make decisions benefiting one of the teams in a game, that team is described to have a 4-4-2-4 formation (4 defenders, 4 midfielders, 2 forwards & 4 match officials).
