This is now somewhat outdated, but was a term meaning pregnant if the pregnancy is undesired, the woman is young or unmarried, etc. The term was used in what was considered "polite" company in order to avoid using the oh-so-harsh word "pregnant."

"Ward, Wally's girlfriend is . . . well, she's in trouble."

a phrase used by closet bigots to make reference to blacks, hispanics, or any other racial group the bigot dislikes; the phrase allows the bigot to get the message accross while maintaining a false facade of propriety
