Scottish play

This is a periphrastic way of referring to William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth," a device sometimes used by actors to avoid referring to the play by name, because of the supposed bad luck that it might bring if it is referred to by name. Likewise, the protagonist and his wife are referred to as"Mr. and Mrs. M."

The Village Players led off this year's season with the Scottish play.

Acadienne

A polite term to refer to women or girls of Acadian (Cajun) ancestry. It refers to the origins of the population in Acadia, now Nova Scotia.

Heather could make a jambalaya or a gumbo with the best of the Acadiennes.

not bikini ready

This is an indirect way of referring to oneself as having some extra weight or insufficient tone, necessitating a crash diet and serious exercising before the summer.

When the moment she was dreading could no longer be avoided, Marie found that she was not bikini ready. Sigh!

Mardi Gras bead flash

A custom which originated in New Orleans, but has traveled easily elsewhere, where a young woman displays her boobs (breasts) for Mardi Gras glass bead necklaces.

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras: I will give a Mardi Gras bead flash with my exquisite minatures to the Burbocam as is my custom; after all, I am proud to be a New Orleanian and keep to our historical rights. Blank Katrina!

homeopathic beer

This is a synonym for light (lite) beer; essentially a watered-down, unsubstantial beer.

Bud, being a wimp, went into Finnegan's Bar and ordered a Bud Lite. The Guinness-drinking crowd snickered at him for ordering a homeopathic beer.

A common greeting used by New Orleanians, converying pleasure upon seeing a friend, especially one that has not been seen for a while, more than a request for location. It's an effusive hello.

When I see my friends in New Orleans, we often say, "Where ya at?"
