The fallacy lies in assuming that rejecting data makes one more realistic, when in fact it abandons the very tools that correct individual bias. It’s a form of anti‑intellectualism dressed as pragmatism, often used to justify policies benefiting elite interests while ignoring contradictory evidence.

A broader, often First World political version of the previous fallacy, where one dismisses scientific findings, theoretical frameworks, and even well‑established social science by appealing to an idealized “real life.” This rhetoric typically surfaces in debates about climate policy, public health, education, or social welfare: “Real life isn’t a textbook,” “People in the real world don’t care about theory,” “Real life is more complex than your models.” The fallacy is that it positions the speaker as a hard‑nosed pragmatist while using “real life” as a rhetorical shield to ignore evidence that challenges their preferred policies. It’s a favorite of politicians and pundits who want to appear grounded while rejecting expertise that inconveniences them.

Pigeonpost

A term with two related meanings in online discourse. First, it refers to a form of harasspost where the goal is to pigeonhole a target—forcing them into a rigid, often stigmatized category regardless of their actual positions, and then using that label to dismiss everything they say. The poster repeatedly insists that their target "is really" a fascist, a tankie, a liberal shill, etc., refusing to engage with actual arguments. Second, pigeonpost describes the broader rhetorical tactic of systemic pigeonholing: dismissing complex positions by reducing them to pre‑fabricated, emotionally charged labels. For example, calling support for BRICS or the Global South "National Bolshevism" or "Duginism" to avoid discussing the actual merits of multipolarity, and dismissing any counter‑argument as merely “apologism.” Pigeonpost turns substantive debate into a game of label imposition, where whoever pins the worst label on their opponent first “wins.”

Hypothesis of Material Survival

The materialist version of survival, proposing that what persists after death is some physical substrate—perhaps quantum information, a pattern in the fabric of spacetime, or an undiscovered energy form. It holds that survival is not transcendence of matter but transformation of matter into a different state. This hypothesis opens scientific inquiry into phenomena like terminal lucidity, reincarnation cases, and mediums without invoking the supernatural.
Example: “He researched reincarnation cases not as folklore but through the Hypothesis of Material Survival—assuming that if information persists, it must do so in a physical way, and therefore should be measurable.”

Hypothesis of Natural Survival

A complement to the Hypothesis of the Natural Beyond, focusing on the persistence of consciousness, identity, or some aspect of the self after physical death—but framed entirely within naturalistic terms. It posits that survival (e.g., of information, energy pattern, or consciousness) is a natural phenomenon, not a miracle, and therefore could be investigated scientifically. It avoids metaphysical assumptions while leaving room for research into near‑death experiences, reincarnation claims, and other phenomena often dismissed out of hand.
