NICU 

NICU is short for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Its where they place sick and/or premature newborns so that they can be monitored, and if necessary, cared for by nurses and Drs. and also therapists.

1. He was placed in the NICU after being born at 18 weeks, and was on a ventilator until he got to be about to his due date at which time he was given a tracheostomy.
2. awwwwww, does he have any lung function?
3. No. He can't see, hear, move, and pp0retty much lies there doing absolutely nothing.

PO 

Short for Pulse Oximeter.

A PO is a device used to monitor the oxygen in a patient's blood. It shines light through a patient's finger, toe, nose, earlobe, or the patient's forhead, and another sensor on the other side of the light wave measures how the light is being absorbed.

1. He's on a PO machine, and they are going to have to put hom on the ventilator, because his oxygen is 85 so he is having another set of desat episodes.

Sevo is short for Sevoflurane.

Sevoflurane 

Sevoflurane is an inhailed anesthetic that is used during general anesthesia, and the drug is given by an anesthesia machine.

Its a quick acting anesthetic, so usually withing the first 10 seconds of inhailation the patient is asleep, and the operating can be started.

ICU 

short for Intensive Care Unit.

ICU is a place in a hospital where they place a person who's in very critical condition so he/she can be closely monitored, and if necessary p0laced in care. They have care from the least critical like [people who had a heart attack, and are breathing, and are fine, but need to be monitored closely, to the sickest of the sickest patients who require complete bodily functional support from a ventilator, ECMO, and lots of other machines.

1. He's in ICU, and they have him on the jet ventilator.
2. What's going on with him?
3. He's probably not going to survive. He's in severe ARDS.

AM is short for Anesthetic Machine.

1. Bring the AM in here, and we'll get him sedated.

IPV 

IPV is short for Intrapulmonary Percussive Ventilation which is a breathing treatment used to help remove secretions.

It can be administered by a mouthpiece, mask, or endotracheal/tracheostomy tube.
A fine aerosol of medication is breathed in, and another part of the medication is percussed into the patient's lungs, so that he can clear them by the cough assist machine, coughing up secretions, and/or suctioning.

1. The patient who has SMA uses IPV, and is very healthy usually with IPV.
