Purp is the slang word for a high grade strain of marijuana which is also known as Grandaddy Purp or Grapes. It's most commonly found in Northern California where it originates and where it is preferred over most other strains of marijuana. It's also commonly found in Southern California and many places bordering California. It is rare in other areas of the U.S. and it is one of the most potent strains in the country. Purp is not the same as Purple Haze, the strain which was most popular during the 60's and 70's. Purp marijuana is dark green or medium green with a purple shade to it on both the leaves and buds. The hairs on Purp can vary in color, such as purple, yellow, or green hairs. It's one of the more popular strains found at medical marijuana dispensaries in the U.S. The word Purp is used commonly in the Bay Area (San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland etc.) to refer specifically to this type of marijuana. Not every marijuana with purple color is necessarily Purp or Grandaddy Purp. Purp has been featured in a number of magazines such as 420 Magazine and High Times. Many Northern California rap artists have mentioned Purp in rap songs, such as the song "I Got Grapes" by Bay Area natives Nump, E-40, and The Federation. Other artists outside the Bay Area have mentioned it in songs as well, including Lil Wayne, in songs like "Walk it Out" and "D.O.A.". Other artists who have mentioned Purp in their songs include Baby Bash, Soulja Boy, Pimp C, Bun B, Rick Ross, and Yung Joc.

Purp is a recreational drink popular in the Southern United States whose main ingredients originally consisted of some type of prescription cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine, and either soda or fruit juice. Recently, the term has expanded to cover mixtures including over-the-counter cough syrup and vodka in place of prescription cough syrup.
