an indirect way to say iloveyou, all cramped into one word.
it came from <3 - which is an emoticon denoting a heart, which basically means love.

so, i<3u is the same as its worded version of ilessthanthreeyou. ;)

someone 1: i heart youuu a lot you know
someone 2: well, ilessthanthreeyou too! :P

and they all lived happily ever after.
