A word for women who spends time with gay or bisexual men, on platonic terms. Its meaning depends on whether the context it is used in is positive or negative, as it can refer to either of two things:
1. Women who are friends with, or prefer to be friends with gay or bisexual men.
2. Women who want a gay friend but only as an accessory; women who go to gay bars only to gawk at drag queens and gay men; women who idolise gay men to the point of fetishisation.

Proper Noun: Typically, this title is bestowed to an ugly and/or fat girl who has been systematically rejected by nearly all non-gay males for a significant portion of her life.
To those who do not fit the aforementioned demographic, some other psychological or emotional problem has likely manifested itself, causing normal romantic developments with non gay males to become problematic at best.
To counteract this state of affairs, the fag hag attaches herself to homosexual males (normally of the extreme flamer variety). Psychosocial data suggests that this is a passive relationship that begins out of fear of rejection, but can often progress to full blown dementia, dullusional or irrational behavior patterns, or obsessive compulsion.
Though not an officially recognized neurological or psychological disorder by the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), hundreds of case studies documenting the behavior have been submitted to the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association for further review.
As of this writing (NOV 2010), no official response has been issued by these governing bodies, but many speculate that fear of social stigma or notions of political correctness have acted as a significant barrier to further study.

An oft maligned term used to describe the deliciously complicated, emotionally rich relationship (albeit platonic...well sometimes...see "fag hag shag") that exists between a gay man and a heterosexual woman (occasionally a "made lesbian". Let's not forget the "made lesbians"! It took a long painful journey for us to arrive at this final destination, so let's savor the vicarious shout out in this definition.) The fag hag relationship is so synergistic and perfect that it should serve as the utopian model for all heterosexual relationships. Ideal characteristics include but are not limited to: unconditional love and understanding, unflinching honesty, and let's not forget fidelity and abject loyalty (oops, the chip that is missing in all heterosexual males.) One never has to worry about a gay man "cheating" on his fag hag. To the contrary, the fag hag is the emotional complement to a gay man's psyche (aside from a gay man's mother-either dead or alive.) Benefits include: tutorials in haute couture, interior decorating and party-planning as well as personal tips on beauty and grooming (every woman could use a personal stylist now and then!) While the pitfalls are few, the fag hag must invest a great deal of time and energy digesting the personal (sometimes all too personal!?) details of her gay man's sex life, whilst not possessing a fulfilling and enriching sex life of her own, or one at all! But it's all worth the time and effort expended as the rewards are great in nature and kind-an enduring partnership that is rooted in mutual respect and love (and let's not forget-it's NON-JUDGMENTAL.)
