Thoreauvian Liberalism
A liberal political philosophy that prioritises individual rights, especially freedom of conscience, private property in the form of land and self‑produced goods, and limited government—but filtered through Thoreau’s anti‑statism and environmental ethics. Thoreauvian liberalism values civil liberties, free speech, and the right to withdraw from society. It supports market mechanisms only when they do not force people into wage slavery or ecological destruction. The state is tolerated as a night watchman, but citizens retain the right to ignore it, peacefully, whenever conscience commands.
Example: “He voted, but also built his own house and refused to buy health insurance, preferring herbal remedies—Thoreauvian liberalism: live free, but take responsibility for living simply.”
