In a United States court case, to cite one's own Constitutional right in the Fifth Amendment to "remain silent" as a defendant, or to not be forced to testify against one's self. This is why a lawyer cannot simply force a defendant into a confession while under oath.

Such withholding is an effort to protect one's reputation, but also could be due to the fact that the individual simply drank too much to remember what happened during the time in question.

I plead the fifth

It means that your aren’t going to incriminate yourself by not saying “yes” or “no”! When you do say this phrase you are basically saying “yes you did it”, but legally they cannot say you said “yes” or “no”.
