A bastardization of the name Olaf, Olav. Historically, a large number of scandinavians settled in the timber rich areas of the upper midwest. Most scandinavians were large, quiet and aloof, which gave the appearance of lack of intelligence. It was originally a term similar to Mick ie an Irishman, or Ivan} a Russian.
