Novenance

Opposite of provenance. The description or history applied to an item purported to be of enhanced value due to particular authorship or historical importance, which upon examination provides no actual link between the object and the alleged authorship or historical significance.
"The auction catalogue said it was a Monet, but the description was novenance- just a biographical sketch and a bunch of pictures of real Monets in museums."

"When they say they will provide proof later, you'll get novenance."
