Was DEFINITELY Indianapolis, Indiana first. Just because Annapolis, Maryland was founded first does NOT give them the right to steal the nickname Naptown. Very much like being the younger sibling sitting shotgun and the older sibling saying that just because they were born first means THEY get shotgun. Which is, in fact, A BITCH MOVE.
Person 1: Where's naptown again?
Person 2: Indianapolis, IN of course.
Person 1: Ooh, man I thought it was Annapolis.
Person 2: Nah, they stole it from Indy.
Person 1: Oh shit, what a BITCH MOVE.

Indianapolis, Indiana. Indianapolis used to be so boring in the early 1900's people would say there is nothing to do, but take a nap in the city. That's why its called Naptown

Naptown is the nickname for Indianapolis, IN. The term Naptown comes from the old jazz movement in the hey-days and is refered in a couple of popular mainstream songs such as Tip Drill by Nelly, Down and Out by Camron, Real Nigga Roll Call by Lil Jon etc. etc. Though it has no mainstream rap scene yet, it one of the midwest's premier cities and has a very deep underground rap scene.
Naptown got Haughville, Brightwood, Gangstaville, Stringtown, Trey-Eigh, Gateway, Hawthorne Projects, Brookside, MLK, The Land, Hard Part, Hillside, Flackville, Eagledale, Fountain Square, and Mars Hill... if the hood dun get you, fi-ty will.

Indianapolis founded: 1821
Annapolis founded: 1649
We've been here way longer. You already have the nickname "Indy" anyways. You can't have two. Get over yourselves and stop being greedy.

Originally a derogatory word used to describe Indianapolis, Indiana when the economy was dead and Indy was merely a crossroads with nothing to do. This term died and then was revived by Jazz musicians and more recently used in rap songs. Naptown now accurately describes the laid back culture of Indianapolis that has spawned from the rural Indiana culture that surrounds it.
Some people also call it naptown due to its "ho hum" party scene in downtown.
