Usually the character in a story of any kind, book, movie, TV show, who has the most importance in the story and does the most to support the plot. Most of the action should follow the main character.

Hermione Granger is a main character; Harry Potter should have been cast as an extra (supporting character at best)

Naruto has about 15 main characters; not a single one of them are developed enough to actually have an important role in the story. Naruto has the fox, without him, Naruto would be useless. Sasuke has the cool eyes now thanks to Itachi, without Itachi, Sasuke would be useless. The Hokages all suck, every other ninja is pretty much pointless. The anime should be called Itachi, instead of Naruto.

It’s a factual definition about a person. That person is always in the spotlight and no-one can prove that fact wrong.
Not everyone can become one, you must meer all of the criteria listed below:
- Your name has to start with a D or an E;
- Your IQ has to be higher than that of a child;
- You must be a human;
- You must speek more than 3 languages fluently;
- You must be annoying (because no-one likes main characters).

A person that is always in the spotlight and is the overall dominating one in a group. A main character has a strong personality that makes him or her shine like a diamond. Not everybody can be one tho, that person is required to own a particular set of skills or characteristics.

When you make things about yourself and forget about your costars and only use them for comedic relief. Things seem to fall into your hands luckily without any help from others.
