Late‑Stage Imperialism
A form of imperialism that no longer relies on direct colonial rule or even overt military occupation, but on debt, intellectual property, algorithm control, and weaponised finance. Late‑stage imperialism extracts value through data, patents, and carbon offsets. It colonises futures by setting the terms of technological development and climate policy. It is imperialism without colonies—but with the same hierarchy, extraction, and epistemic violence, now rendered invisible by complexity and speed.
Example: “The global tech company’s terms of service overrode local data laws, and its AI tools set the standards for entire industries—late‑stage imperialism, where the colony is the digital commons.”
