It's as much about sociology and ethics (designing societies for a generation ship) as it is about metallurgy and plasma physics.

They had to design a social governance algorithm for the crew's descendants ten generations down, and a reactor maintenance manual so simple it could be understood after 400 years of linguistic drift. The manual is mostly pictograms of people not touching the glowing thing."
