Epistemological Fanaticism
An extreme, uncritical devotion to a particular epistemological framework, treating it as the sole legitimate path to truth and attacking any alternative as dangerous or stupid. The epistemological fanatic cannot tolerate ambiguity, pluralism, or the possibility that different domains might require different epistemic approaches. They often reduce all questions to their preferred method (e.g., "What does the science say?" for ethics, art, or meaning). Epistemological fanaticism is the enemy of intellectual humility.
Example: "He insisted that love could only be understood through neurotransmitter studies—epistemological fanaticism, reducing a complex human experience to a single method."
Epistemological Fundamentalism
A rigid, literalist adherence to a foundationalist epistemology that treats certain beliefs as self-justifying and immune to revision. Epistemological fundamentalism often claims that science or logic provides an absolute foundation for all knowledge, ignoring the historical and cultural contingency of scientific paradigms. It rejects fallibilism and pragmatism, demanding certainty where none is possible. It is fundamentalism about method rather than scripture.
Example: "He demanded 'indubitable foundations' for any belief, then claimed that science provided them—epistemological fundamentalism, chasing certainty in an uncertain world."
