Deaf with a big "D" includes any hearing impaired individual that belongs to the Deaf community and primarily use ASL (American Sign Language).

Missy was hard-of-hearing but thought of herself as part of the Deaf community.

Deaf means you can't hear anything, or can't hear too much. Can be temporary and permanent. The other way to say deaf is hearing loss.

I gathered a bucket of hickory nuts out in the woods yesterday and when I cracked them open, half of them were deaf.
