The origin of the word comes from the City of Angels. Many famous people make Los Angeles their home. These famous people are constantly in demand and have little time to attend every request. In order to appear polite these famous people agree to attend an event or appear on a talk show, but these famous people never intend to fulfill these hollow promises.
The origin of the word was spawned by the famous people that live in Los Angeles, but everyday Angelino’s and Californians have adopted the California Nod. The California Nod has become as common as saying hello.

Sally suggested to Kristi the two should have drinks after work. Kristi verbally agreed, but never intended to grab drinks. Kristi gave Sally the “California Nod”.

What one resorts to after they've said "what?" too many times, and STILL can't understand what the hell the other person said.
Person #1: Wew gan udait widme?
Person #2: What?
Person #1: Wew gan udait widme?
Person #2: I'm sorry, I can't understand you. What'd you say?
Person #1: Wew gan udait widme?
Person#2: *Nod and Smile*
Person #1: Yes! That hot chick just agreed to go on a date with me!

When attending a training or conference, and whenever the speaker says something, the crowd nods knowingly and approvingly in unison.
It's a way to appear engaged without learning a god damn thing because nothing of substance is being offered.
The speaker goes on thinking he has made a difference, and the crowd goes home feeling like they are a part of something bigger.

Dan sat thru another wasted day at the conference. Realizing when he left, all that got accomplished was a handful of nonprofit nods to make everyone feel good.

A nod of recognition between two shaggers. Much like the common "runner's nod", it is a simple nod of encouragement to a fellow shagger, tacitly telling them to "keep up the good work!".
"So Declan now had a girlfriend, and Shagger's Nod began to replace 'hello' as we passed each other in the library. Finally, he was part of the club."
