hooker

A commonly used slang term for prostitute. The word is used to refer to a woman who recieves payment for sexual pleasures she gives to the man she is employed by. Popular legend has it that the term "hooker" came from the American Civil War. There are many different versions of the legend involving Major General Joseph Hooker. A common one: Originally called "camp followers" prostitutes would follow the camps of the army. It was the job of the commanding general to make sure that these women were kept away from the soldiers camps. However, General Hooker never bothered to do so. They soon became known as "Hooker's other army" because they could be seen throughout the Union camps. Later it was shortened to "hookers." There are more still that tell of men questioning the identity of the ladies and being told "They're Hooker's" as in, belonging to Hooker, but the name stuck. Despite the many stories, this may or may not be true. The term "hooker" was used in print as early as the 1830's (years before Hooker was a public figure, and around 30 years before he was the head of the Army of the Potomac.) He was not a "pimp" in any way, as a select few rumor him to be, and was quite a good officer despite his failures. His name, however, seems to be linked to these women who sell their bodies for money.

A person who is "on the hook" will be overly infatuated with another person. The person who is the desired generally takes little notice (and often complete advantage) of the person who is on the hook.

Often times the person who is on the hook is a back-up.

Signs that you are on the hook:
1) giving foot rubs
2) making mixed tapes/cds/play lists
3) making chocolate cake
4) dropping everything at a moments notice to be with the other person.

Ted: "Lisa came over last night and I gave her a foot rub as we watched a move."
Marshall: "Are you guys dating now?"
Ted: "No, she is still with her boyfriend, she is just looking for the right time to break the news."
Marshall: "Dude, you are so on the hook."

Hook upgrade

An term of derision. In this situation, a woman regularly hooks up with a man who is only interested in casual sex. The man will either explicitly say that he does not want a romantic relationship, or will repeatedly tell the woman that he is “not sure what he wants”- as a way to defer the subject, or to indirectly tell the woman “no.” But the woman naively believes that if she just sticks it out long enough and shows the man how much she cares for him, a proper relationship will eventually begin. In actuality this will never, ever happen. The “hook upgrade” is the female equivalent of the “gay friend” phenomenon.

Despite several failures, Buffy continues to believe in the possibility of the hook upgrade.
