This image is often perpetuated by Media outlets as whenever a crime would occur, media outlets would use the term 'South Auckland' to describe the area the crime was committed instead of the specific area/suburb that the crime took place.
Although there may be some truth to what is said negatively about South Auckland, what is often overlooked is the thriving culture that presides there. The culture of South Auckland is largely inspired traditional Maori/Polynesian culture, as well as African American culture in America. This is largely due to the influence that the Black Panther movement, and subsequently the Polynesian Panther Movement, had on young Maori and Polynesians in the 1970's.
In recent years, many denizens of 'South Auckland' proudly proclaim where they are from despite the unfortunate stereotypes and negative connotations that have been associated with the area for the past 50 years.
