Some campers try to defend themselves, but most of the online gaming comminity are of the opinion that they are boring, and just make the game that much duller. A good solution to the camper problem is to ban sniper rifles (were possible) or to play maps where camping will only get you kille such as "harbor" on Call of Duty. It is also just as good to have a map where there are some good areas to camp, but if you spawn in the wrong place, you're fucked. A good example of this would be "rocket" in Call of Duty. It is esspecially fun to melee campers who don't see you.
