In the 1940s heroin was illegalized and people craving a high turned to glue sniffing. It was easier to do because you could pour it into a can and suck the air out of the can while pretending to drink, getting high in the process. This became known as getting can faced.

Getting on the cans

An Australian expression for drinking beer. It usually refers to consuming packaged beer away from licensed premises, typically at home or a barbecue. Other types of alcohol are not usually consumed when one is “getting on the cans”.

Well mate, I knock off at 4pm and it’s a quick drive home, so I’ll be getting on the cans by 5pm at the very latest!
