A 1980s subgenre of hardcore punk with actual talent involved, with a missing plothole somewhere in the script of time that somehow led to a modern subculture that has nothing to do with the musical genre whatsoever.

Since when did emo go from underground punk music to wearing a whore-load of make-up and dressing up in clothing that doesn't fit, while listening to pop-punk and crappy metalcore?

Emo means emotional.
A lot of people show their emotions very strongly, therefore they are emotional, or emo for short.
Not all emo's cut and complain about life. Not all emo's want to end there life. MTV has filled you head with lies. Some emo's do want to die, and some want to cut, but not every single emo wants to die. I just wanted to clear things up a bit for people who think all emo's cut.

I'm emo, but I don't want to die or cut myself. I love live and I don't want to end it.

Emo 

A person usually an albino white kid with dark hair. They cry and complain about how life sucks but really they just need to smoke a joint once in a while. They wear tight jeans because they think everyone is gay like them and likes looking at their disgusting tight bodies. They wear tight shirts too because they are fucked up. They sometimes wear glasses, retarded shoes, and they listen to stupid bands like Coldplay and Slipknot.

And then they got their whole ear pierce bullshit, and emo tatoos. Also if you want to be emo you need to follow a specific guideline.

1. Be an albino middle class white kid

2. Act all cool on a skateboard.

3. Be sad and bitchy all the time.

4. Have a small 2 inch dick.

5. Be a fucking faggot.

6. Worship Satan

7. Cut your wrists

Follow those steps and you're an emo.

Josh: I cut my wrists last night.

Nick: Nice, I was just jacking off to Slipknot vids and then I went boardin' on my sick deck. I can do a neat trick on my skateboard!

Josh: I can do sick tricks too.

Nick: Yeah. Decks are sick.

short for "emotional punk" started in the 90's with bands like fugazi. i dont like them, but hey what do i know. emo is a type of music not a fashion trend, or hair-do. emo doesnt mean "im going to go cut myself." that is a massicist. i listen to emotional punk, and i have no desire to cut myself, or cut my hair so that it drapes my face. if you call this genre of music "emo," then you might as well call everything from country to rap emo, because the majority is all about heartache or tragedy.

"that kid has tight pants, and wierd hair! i bet he cuts himself, and then cries himself to sleep everynight!" thats not emo.
