Pessimistic Tourism

A type of tourism in which people will visit somewhere specifically because they believe that it is endangered in some way or another. For example, people visit Antarctica or rainforests and other untouched natural wildernesses as they believe that it will be destroyed due to climate change and direct human action in the near future and want to visit it whilst they still can. People might also do the same for man-made areas before they are supposedly torn down or otherwise closed or repurposed.

Those who visit Antarctica or glaciers solely because they know it is melting and will soon disappear are engaging in pessimistic tourism.

Tourism based on spending excessive amounts of money and taking extreme risk at the expense of the public with the only reward is the activity’s exclusivity of the less monied population.

The money spent on civilian space travel shows that ego-tourism dollars can reach the equivalent of the economy of a small less industrialized nation.

drug tourist

A person who travels and relocates to another city to an open air drug market (usually a homeless encampment) for safe and easy access to their drug of choice, often stealing to support the habit.

People who are homeless in Oakland are not typically from here. They are drug tourists.
