Hess features such emblematic examples of the genre by focusing on such late greats as 'tiny naylors' the pines and 'ships(never close) coffee shops. The ships on pico in la is briefly highlighted in the 1985 film"into the night" it has long since been demolished. Hess is Still the architectural critic for "the San Jose mercury news"

Alan hess features "panns diner"and "wichstands " patio in his book "googie-coffer shop architecture". Although panns in "ladera heights"is still a functioning diner. The building which housed wichstands patio at slauson and overhill has been repurposed
