The branch of thought that asks whether the supernatural exists, and if so, what that means for our understanding of reality, morality, and whether we should be nice to strangers in case they're angels in disguise. It grapples with questions like: If miracles are possible, why are they so rare and always ambiguous? If God intervenes in human affairs, why is the intervention always a "subtle nudge" rather than, say, solving world hunger? And if ghosts exist, why do they spend all their time in drafty hallways rather than, say, the VIP section of nice restaurants? Supernatural philosophy is the art of asking questions that have no answers, but at least the questions sound profound.

Example: "After a long night of supernatural philosophy, he concluded that if ghosts existed, they were probably just as confused as the living and spent their afterlife doing the same things they did in life—wandering around, losing things, and complaining about the temperature. This was either profound insight or projection, and he couldn't tell which."

Paranormal Philosophy

The branch of thought that asks what the existence of paranormal phenomena would mean for our understanding of reality, consciousness, and death. If ghosts exist, is there an afterlife? If UFOs are real, are we alone, and if they're here, why won't they land at the White House instead of hovering over cows in rural Ohio? And if Bigfoot is out there, why is he so camera-shy? Paranormal philosophy grapples with the implications of things that probably aren't true, preparing us for a future that likely won't arrive, which is either a profound exercise in open-mindedness or a massive waste of mental energy.

Example: "He sat in deep paranormal philosophy, wondering: if ghosts are real, why do they always appear in old, drafty buildings rather than modern, comfortable ones? Is the afterlife just really into Victorian architecture? And if so, does that mean our design choices determine our post-death experience? He then realized he was asking questions that assumed ghosts existed, which was a big assumption, but also, wouldn't it be cool if they did?"

Media Philosophy

The branch of thought that asks what media does to our perception of reality, truth, and each other. If everything is mediated through screens, is there an "unmediated" reality anymore? If you see a war on TV, are you experiencing it or just watching a representation of it? And if your entire knowledge of the world comes through media, are you living in the world or in a media-constructed simulation of it? Media philosophy doesn't have answers, but it does have a lot of questions that will make you feel vaguely uneasy while scrolling through your phone.

Example: "After a day of doomscrolling, he entered a state of media philosophy. 'If I see a disaster on Twitter, then see it again on Instagram, then again on TikTok, am I experiencing the disaster or just experiencing media about the disaster? And if I don't post about it, did it even happen?' He then posted this thought, completing the cycle."

Game Philosophy

The branch of thought that asks what games reveal about existence, choice, and the nature of reality. If life is a game, what are the rules? Who designed them? And is there a cheat code? Game philosophy grapples with questions like: Are we players or pieces? Is winning the point, or is playing the point? And if the universe is a simulation, is the simulator having fun, or is this just their version of a boring spreadsheet simulator? Game philosophy doesn't provide answers, but it does make you wonder whether you should have chosen a different character class.

Example: "After losing his job, his girlfriend, and his apartment in the same month, he sat in deep game philosophy. 'If life is a game,' he thought, 'this is a really unbalanced difficulty spike. Did I miss a tutorial? Forget to level up a crucial skill? Or is this just a poorly designed game with no regard for player experience?' He then respawned at his mom's house and started a new playthrough."

Gaming philosophy suggests that play is not a distraction from life; it's a rehearsal for it, a space where we practice being the people we wish we were, without the real-world consequences.

Gaming Philosophy Example: "After 200 hours in a fantasy RPG, he sat in gaming philosophical contemplation. He had saved kingdoms, slain dragons, and been honored as a hero. In real life, he had missed three deadlines, forgotten to call his mother, and eaten cereal for dinner five nights in a row. Was the game an escape from failure, or was failure the price of the escape? He wasn't sure, but he had one more quest to finish before deciding."

The branch of thought that asks what it means for creatures of Earth to leave it, and whether we should. Is spaceflight humanity's greatest adventure or its most expensive distraction? When we look back at Earth from orbit, do we see unity or just a really small planet with really big problems? And if we find other life, will we finally stop fighting each other, or will we just have new people to fight? Spaceflight philosophy is the art of asking profound questions while watching a rocket launch on YouTube, eating chips, and feeling simultaneously inspired and inadequate.

Example: "He watched a live stream of a rocket launch and entered spaceflight philosophy. 'There go humans,' he thought, 'strapped to controlled explosions, hurling themselves into the void, all to answer questions we didn't even know to ask a generation ago. And I'm sitting here, wondering if I should order pizza. The contrast was humbling. He ordered the pizza anyway, because some questions are more immediate than others."

The branch of thought that asks what the cosmos means for our sense of scale, significance, and purpose. In a universe of billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars, what is one planet, one species, one person? If we're made of stardust, are we the universe experiencing itself, or just complex chemistry with delusions of grandeur? And if we're alone in all that vastness, is that loneliness or freedom? Space philosophy doesn't provide answers, but it does make you feel very small and very precious at the same time, which is either wisdom or vertigo.
