Trump reacted slowly to the storming, was initially "delighted" over it,20 first resisting sending the National Guard to quell the violent mob,37 and eventually praising the rioters as "great patriots" and telling them to "go home in peace" while reiterating false claims of election fraud.3839

On January 8, draft articles of impeachment of Trump for "incitement of insurrection" were circulated in Congress.51
