A melanated person who is NOT a foundational black American that uses their melanin ("blackness") to undermine black Americans (FBA). Tethers typically use their "blackness" to act as a representative for black Americans (FBA) for the benefit of their (white) handlers while having disdain for black Americans.
Barack Obama is the textbook definition of a tether who used his blackness to get the black vote while not doing anything specifically for black people (FBA)

A person of a foreign lineage who undermines and/or unjustifiably dislikes, and/or discredits, and/or denigrates and/or seeks to thwart the legitimate aspirations of Foundational Black Americans and whose forbears came to the lands of North America as colonists or some other foreign invader; or a person who came to the United States as an immigrant or whose parents, grandparents etc. came to the US as immigrants who likewise undermines, and/or unjustifiably dislikes, and/or discredits, and/or denigrates and/or seeks to thwart the legitimate aspirations of Foundational Black Americans ; this includes persons of all races and ethnicities, but especially pertains to foreign lineage Negroid people i.e. native Negroid Africans, Negroid Carribeans and Negroid Hispanics etc. This is due to the aforementioned people being of the same race as Foundational Black American people and thus them being a sort of doppelganger in relation to them.
All tethers have forbears who came to the lands of North America as colonists, or they themselves are immigrants or the offspring of immigrants. Additionally, they have a disdain for and/or seek to thwart the legitimate aspirations of Foundational Black Americans in some way.

A term used by African and Caribbean immigrants to describe a small subset of African Americans that identify as FBA (Foundational Black American) who deny being the same race as an Africans because of their European last names, and believe Africans & Caribbeans are a bigger threat than the white supremacy that killed Martin Luther King. Because tether was often used as an insult against them, African Americans (FBA) and their leader Tariq Nasheed "reclaimed" the word. Tether can now be seen used amongst African Americans to insult Africans & Caribbeans.
