I hit a cat on the way

An excuse given when running late to work, wedding, party, etc. Instead of trying to make up something, you just say you hit a cat, that is why you're late. Hitting a cat wouldn't impact anything, in terms of time, so it's not an excuse, but more or less done to add amusement to the tardiness and delfect any heat you would get otherwise.

Text Message: Can we move our meeting till later in the day, I hit a cat on the way there.

Your boss: Lol, I was about to fire you, but this is clever, I'm going to reuse this.

Hit The Nail On The Coffin

A Malaphor, or an idiom blend, combining "hit the nail on the head" (to do something exactly right) and "another nail in the coffin"(something that will harm or destroy someone – e.g., cigarette) to mean someone succeeded at doing something that may lead to their demise or the demise of another or just that they did a great job at something that they probably shouldn't have done at all.

Best used sarcastically.

"You did a great job of pissing off your ex. Really hit the nail on the coffin back there."

The ugly tree being the source of ugly people (to grow on the ugly tree like a fruit etc. is to be of undesirable appearance).

Bob: (points to a female) good lord my dear man, take a gander at yonder female, she is quite hideous I do protest!

Bruce: (in disgust) I must agree old chap, poor lady seems to have fallen out of the ugly tree!
