Even though the person hiding has found the perfect place to escape detection, they pass gas or poop their diaper. This allows another child with some intestinal fortitude to discover this child and anoint he or she as the next person to be "it." A favorite game in the Bush White house, as it was well known that Bush's nose was dulled by cocaine use and Dick Cheney was incontinent (he often referred to his progeny as "WMD's" or "Weapons of Mass De-stink-tion". Carl Rove could smell a dump in the Lincoln Bedroom from the Oval office, so he was never it for very long. Condi Rice sometimes would not dump for a solid week, and so Rove knew how how to pick his targets.

No one wanted to play "hide and stink" when it was potty time for Dubya. He had a yen for tossing his feces when you got a little close.
