Running down the score

The opposite of running up the score. A team that has no chance of winning scores as the game comes to a close.

In sports where the winner's margin of victory matter, it is important for the losing team to erase as much of the scoring deficit as possible.

Running down the score was necessary for NC State against Villanova if they wanted to stay as a top 25 college basketball team in next week's poll.
