smiley

smileys are the simple way to capture everyday emotions into a small combination of computer characters. adding too much to a smiley defeats the simple emotions that the smiley is meant to capture. smileys are usually used to lighten a conversation, or in other cases, show saddness or sympathy. some types of smileys show other expressions other than the simple smile, or frown. most smileys have interchangable features, ie; eyes and mouths, yet still display the same emotion. added mouths to any smiley enforces the smiley and implies a greater emotion than the plain smiley. more complex smileys are sometimes not considered smileys and rather called 'emotes'

emo smiley

The emo smiley is often represented as 'c:'. Emo and scene kids use it to be a cuter smiley face than ':-)', and on occasion, some white girls may use it, thinking they are cool (the same white girls who think Peirce The Veil is heavy metal). Often times, this emoticon will be used an insane amount of times in a single message, sometimes varying from 'cx' to ':c'. It's a cuter emote, definitely, but because it is overused by the scene and emos, it has lost its adorable reputation.

Gummy Smile

A condition also known as excessive gingival display in which the individual shows an abnormal amount of gums while smiling. Of the many causes, the most common ones include short teeth, a hyperactive upper lip and an elarged upper jaw bone. People with this condition can be quite repulsive while smiling, and therefore treatment is recommended. Celebrities with this condition include Miley Cyrus and Jon Heder. Related terms include "gummy laugh" in which the individual's laugh also shows an abnormal amount of gums, and therefore is equally repulsive.
