The Rule

In video game store etiquette, The Rule is the obligation one has to hand a video game console over to other people waiting to play once that person loses the game he is on. Failure to follow The Rule will often result in bystanders complaining about disregard for this sacred rule.

rule 0

a.k.a. "The GM is always right."

The unwritten rule in tabletop role-playing games (such as Dungeons & Dragons) which grants the game master the right to suspend or override the published game rules whenever s/he deems necessary.

Similar to a house rule; however, rule zero may be invoked unilaterally, at any time and does not have to be agreed upon in advance by the players.

When abused, can lead to an inconsistent, confusing, or frustrating experience for the players.
Bob: I climb up the wall and into the wizard's castle, bypassing the defenses. I rolled a 20, so I succeed.
GM: The wall is magically warded against climbing. You fail.
Bob: But a 20 is an automatic success!
GM: Rule 0. You fail.

59-Minute Rule

Refers to the practice of letting employees leave work an hour early. The term derives from the military, where supervisors are often not permitted to let their personnel leave early, but ARE permitted to grant their staff breaks, as long as they are less than 1 hour. On special occasions, a supervisor can work around the prohibition on early excusal by giving the staff a 59-minute break at the very end of the day; thus allowing them to leave about an hour early. The "59-Minute Rule" is often put into effect on the Friday before a three-day weekend.

Third Date Rule
